As a child of a Jamaican family born outside of Jamaica, I always felt like an outsider to the culture. During a heritage tour to the island I came across a choir singing an incredibly soulful song full of the pathos emblematic to spirituals but oddly, it had a calypso beat underneath. This was my introduction to the Jamaican Spiritual, or Revival Hymn, the sacred music of the Jamaican slaves and their descendants.
This project is meant to introduce a little known part of Jamaican culture to North Americans whether of Jamaican descent or otherwise. The project includes:
1. Performing Lecture-Recitals
2. Recording a CD of arrangements by Jamaican composers
3. Publishing an anthology of the arrangements
4. Creating a documentary of the process!
